Musculoskeletal pain is pain that affects the muscles, ligaments and tendons, along with the bones.
The causes of musculoskeletal pain are varied. Muscle tissue can be damaged with the wear and tear of daily activities. Trauma to an area (jerking movements, auto accidents, falls, fractures, sprains, dislocations, and direct blows to the muscle) also can cause musculoskeletal pain. Other causes of pain include postural strain, repetitive movements, overuse, and prolonged immobilization. Changes in posture or poor body mechanics may bring about spinal alignment problems and muscle shortening, therefore causing other muscles to be misused and become painful.
Most musculoskeletal pain has to do with repressed emotion related to Anger, Frustration, Resentment, Indecision, Being pissed off, Stubbornness, Emotional Repression, Depression, Irrationality and/or Aggression. When a person feels that way chronically, the Liver/Gall bladder System will have trouble holding and storing the trapped emotions. So it sends it to the areas governed by the Liver/Gall bladder System, the muscles, joints and tendons. This leads to musculoskeletal pain. If you suffer with this, a consultation with your Holistic Chiropractor can help you overcome this painful condition.
People with musculoskeletal pain sometimes complain that their entire bodies ache. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch or burn. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the common symptoms are:
Your doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination and medical history. In addition, your doctor may perform diagnostic studies to confirm the diagnosis.
Medicines Two Choices for You
Different types of manual therapy, or mobilization, can be used to treat people with spinal alignment problems. For acute musculoskeletal pain, these techniques have been shown to speed recovery. Working with a Holistic Chiropractor who specializes in these conditions is important. Developing a well-rounded, multifaceted approach to restoring balance to your body and eliminating the underlying cause of your pain is important. Discussing the time fram and commitment level with your doctor is prudent before beginning a treatment plan.
In patients with musculoskeletal disorders such as fibromyalgia, medications to increase the body's level of serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters that modulate sleep, pain, and immune system function) are prescribed in low doses. Some of the medicines used to aid sleep include Ambien, Klonopin, and Desyrel.
As with all medications, discussing with your doctor or pharmacist the side-effects and complications of your medication before beginning to take it. Understanding how to come off your medication is something you also need to be aware of before beginning any medication. Some times, you are not able to come off the medication because of the side-effects associated with the withdrawal. Strongly consider this before beginning medical treatment.
Other treatments may include:
Exercise that includes muscle strengthening and stretching
Physical or occupational therapy
Acupuncture or acupressure
Osteopathic manipulation (a whole system of evaluation and treatment designed to achieve and maintain health by restoring normal function to the body)
Injections with anesthetic or anti-inflammatory medications in or around the painful sites
