Stomach Problems

Stomach problems, such as Gastritis, have become more and more common in our society, which are due to a variety of reasons that include:

  • Eating too fast and failure to chew your food adequately
  • Drinking with your meals
  • Poor production of stomach acid leading to incomplete breakdown of proteins in your food.  This will lead to fermentation of your carbohydrates in the stomach creating gas, bloating and indigestion.
  • Combining your foods while eating (carbohydrates with your proteins)
  • Medications (prescription or over-the-counter) that affect proper digestion

What Function Does The Stomach Serve?

Your stomach's primary functions are to:

  • Breakdown your complex proteins into amino acids for absorption in your small intestine
  • Destroy any pathogens (parasites, viruses, bacteria, virons) that may have entered into the digestive system through your food
  • Absorb calcium into the blood for proper Immune System function, Bone health, Musculoskeletal health, Nervous System health, Skin health among others

When these functions do not occur properly, the following results:

Stomach ache and abdominal pain: ALL of the following indicate Gallbladder irritation and should be properly addressed.

A stomach ache is a term often used to refer to cramps or a dull ache in the stomach (abdomen). It's usually short-lived and is often not serious.

Severe abdominal pain is a greater cause for concern. If it starts suddenly and unexpectedly, it should be regarded as a medical emergency, especially if the pain is concentrated in a particular area.

Call your General Practitioner as soon as possible or go to your nearest Hospital Emergency Room if this is the case.

If you feel pain in the area around your ribs, you most likely have a Hiatal Hernia.

Stomach cramps with bloating

Stomach cramps with bloating are often caused by trapped wind. This is a very common problem that can be embarrassing, but is easily dealt with. Your pharmacist will be able to recommend a product, which can be bought over the counter to treat the problem.

Sudden stomach cramps with diarrhea

If your stomach cramps have started recently and you also have diarrhea, the cause may be a stomach bug (gastroenteritis). This means you have a viral or bacterial infection of the stomach and bowel, which should get better without treatment after a few days.  Stay fully hydrated to prevent complications of dehydration.

Gastroenteritis may be caused by coming into close contact with someone who's infected, or by eating contaminated food (food poisoning).

If you have repeated bouts of stomach cramps and diarrhea, you may have a long-term condition, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Sudden severe abdominal pain

If you have sudden agonizing pain in a particular area of your stomach, call your General Practitioner immediately or go to your nearest Emergency Room. It may be a sign of a serious problem that could rapidly get worse without treatment.

Serious causes of sudden severe abdominal pain include:

  • appendicitis – the swelling of the appendix (a finger-like pouch connected to the large intestine), which causes agonizing pain in the lower right-hand side of your abdomen, and means your appendix may need to be removed
  • a bleeding or perforated stomach ulcer – a bleeding, open sore in the lining of your stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine)
  • acute cholecystitis – inflammation of the gallbladder, which is often caused by gallstones; in many cases, your medical Doctor will suggest your gallbladder be removed.  Please DO NOT DO THIS prior to speaking with Dr. Huntoon.
  • kidney stones – small stones may be passed out in your urine, but larger stones may block the kidney tubes, and you'll need to go to hospital to have them broken up
  • diverticulitis – inflammation of the small pouches in the bowel that sometimes requires treatment with antibiotics in hospital

If your General Practitioner suspects you have one of these conditions, they may refer you to hospital immediately.

Sudden and severe pain in your abdomen can also sometimes be caused by an infection of the stomach and bowel (gastroenteritis). It may also be caused by a pulled muscle in your abdomen or by an injury.

Long-term or recurring abdominal pain

See your General Practitioner if you or your child have persistent or repeated abdominal pain. The cause is often not serious and can be managed.

Possible causes in adults include:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – a common condition that causes bouts of stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea or constipation; the pain is often relieved when you go to the toilet
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – long-term conditions that involve inflammation of the gut, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
  • a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) that keeps returning – in these cases, you will usually also experience a burning sensation when you urinate
  • Constipation
  • Period pain – painful muscle cramps in women that are linked to the menstrual cycle
  • other stomach-related problems – such as a Stomach Ulcer, Heartburn and Acid reflux, or Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)

Possible causes in children include:

  • Constipation
  • a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) that keeps returning
  • Heartburn and Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Abdominal migraines – recurrent episodes of abdominal pain with no identifiable cause

Medicines Two Choices

Dr. Huntoon's Alternative Medical Perspective

Dr. Huntoon has quite a large amount of experience resolving these challenging health conditions affecting the stomach.  They usually ALWAYS begin with Gallbladder irritation.  Understanding the functional anatomy and what should be occurring during normal digestion, when there is a problem associated with various symptoms, it is not hard to determine what the malfunction is, what is causing it, and what are the BEST options for fully resolving the concern.  This will usually involve Whole Food Nutritional Supplements to stop the inflammation, repair any tissue damage that may have occurred, and give your body what it needs to fully resolve your concern.  There will also be some modifications in what you are eating, the order in which you eat it and the treatment of any food allergies you my have that can be contributing to the stomach upset.  Sitting with Dr. Huntoon to fully discuss you concern by having a Consultation in preparation for an Examination to determine all the components associated with your stomach problems would be prudent.

Your Solution

Working with a Holistic Chiropractor, like Dr. Huntoon, who has experience in addressing your stomach problems is important.  Medications known to have harmful side-effects OR surgical procedures that alter your body permanently are not the best way to approach these conditions.  Knowing that these "remedies" are always waiting for you, beginning with conservative care using natural methods to solve you problem versus doing things such as medication or surgery, which are not natural seems prudent.  Regardless of the direction you take, be sure to address the underlying CAUSE of this condition, the Gallbladder irritation.  This has ALWAYS remedied the concern.
