Do you suffer from Chronic Health concerns?   Perhaps you have an acute health issue and you've already been to your doctor.  Are you hesitant to take the prescribed medication?  Are you being told you need surgery and the thought of that scares you?  Are you considering another way; a more natural way without medication?

Watch this video where Dr. Huntoon discusses the
4 Causes of ALL Health Concerns and what your doctor may have missed when evaluating your health.

What is a Holistic Chiropractor?

All Chiropractors receive their Doctorate in Chiropractic after earning a 4-year Bachelors degree in undergraduate study, before going to 5 years of chiropractic school.  While in chiropractic school, they receive a second Bachelors Degree in Human Biology, before graduating with a Doctorate of Chiropractic. They have spent in excess of 10,000 hours in studying Anatomy, Nutrition, Pathology, Embryology, Histology, Chiropractic Technique as well as spending 3 semesters seeing patients as an intern.  Upon graduation, many graduates go on to open a practice.  And they practice Traditional Chiropractic by giving adjustments to their patient's spines.

A Holistic Chiropractor is a chiropractor who goes beyond just adjusting the spine.  A Holistic Chiropractor is a practitioner who has studied beyond their Doctorate Degree and has spent thousands of hours studying other aspects of health-related to conditions not considered in the arena of a Traditional Chiropractor.

The Traditional Chiropractor treats Subluxationthe minor misalignments of the spine (vertebrae), causing irritation to the nerve with a loss of normal function; An interruption of communication from the brain to any cell, tissue or organ in the body.  This is all the Traditional Chiropractor treats.  It is understood that by removing nerve interference between the brain and the body, normal function can be restored to the area(s) of miscommunication, which allows the person to heal.  And the theory is sound, as chiropractic has been around for more than 120 years successfully treating countless people throughout the world.

Why Does Traditional Chiropractic Take So Long

One of the biggest criticisms of Chiropractic is the number of treatments involved in treating a person's subluxation to restore proper functioning of the person's spine, thus restoring a person's health.  This is a two-fold problem:

  • the person with the health concern has not been properly educated about the chronic nature of their condition and doesn't understand the need for care in order to correct their concern
  • the Chiropractor administering the care has not taken the time to help the patient fully understand the nature of their condition and the time needed to correct the cause of their concern

If these two points are properly addressed and understood, the time it takes to make a correction would not seem so long compared to the time it took to create the imbalance and how life habits will tend to keep the body in its state of subluxation.

A Holistic Chiropractor goes beyond a Traditional Chiropractor

True, they treat Subluxation as a Traditional Chiropractor does.  Additionally, they look for relationships for why a person gets the subluxation.  They look to not only correct the subluxation but to correct the contributing factors associated with the malfunction that leads to the subluxation in the first place.  These are the lifestyle habits, the stresses and the chronic nature of not addressing the concern that the Holistic Chiropractor will help a person address.  That is why it is considered Holistic.  It addresses the whole.

Let's face it: If a Chiropractor treats ONLY the subluxation (the misaligned vertebrae) without addressing the reason why the vertebrae went out of alignment, when the patient goes back into their normal lives, the likelihood of the subluxation returning is very high.  As a result, the person would need more treatment for their condition if the reason for the subluxation in their normal daily lives still exists.

Therefore, a Holistic Chiropractor is one who looks for the underlying cause of the Subluxation and helps their patient address those specific reasons.  By helping a person deal with their unique and specific stresses that create the muscle tension and cause the vertebrae to be pulled out of their normal position (Subluxation), a Holistic Chiropractor goes beyond simply making adjustments again and again and again on each office visit.  And by addressing the underlying stress that leads to subluxation, the Holistic Chiropractor can get results that are faster and are more lasting, without the intense treatment schedules most chiropractors recommend.

And the person with the health imbalance needs to understand is it is a co-creative process, not a "let me drop off my condition, you switch out the part (like an auto mechanic) and let me just get back to my life...without the pain or dysfunction.

What Are the Underlying Causes of Subluxation

The number one cause of subluxation is STRESS.  Stress can be defined as the non-specific response of the body to any demand made upon it that the person cannot adapt to.  Each demand made upon our body is in a sense unique and specific.  These come in several different forms: Physical, Chemical, Mental, Emotional and Thermal Stress.  Stress, by itself, is not bad for the body.  In fact, when a person is stressed in a positive way (exercise or eating healthy), the body adapts with more ability to manage the stress, as it gets stronger and more efficient.

The problem develops when the stress does not allow the body to respond in a positive manner.  When the body cannot adapt to these forms of stress, the muscles tense and the corresponding vertebrae the muscles attach to will be pulled out of their normal position (Subluxation), thus creating pressure on the nerves protected by the vertebrae, resulting in blocking of communication and a loss of normal function.  And if not properly addressed to its complete cause, the condition will be slow to go away, if it actually goes away at all.

Consider Your Stress Levels

Physical Stress: the physical actions we take when walking, running, sitting, driving, sleeping and interacting with life.  Does your body feel stressed because of a lack of proper physical conditioning?  Is your posture perfect, or do you slouch?  Do you spend more time in front of a desk than in being out and moving?  Do you exercise regularly?  If you do, do your muscles get sore after your workout or after doing a new activity?  If you said yes to any of those questions, you most likely suffer from the effects of Physical Stress.

Chemical Stress:  We live in a sea of toxins.  We are exposed to greater than 80,000 different chemicals every week simply by living.  Less than 20,000 of them are regulated by the FDA.  We get exposed to these chemicals through the foods we eat, the water that we drink and the air that we breathe.  As a result, our body will tend to surround these toxins in a layer of fat and store them away from your vital organs and glands.  This is one of the biggest contributors to obesity.  Is it possible for you to avoid the effects of these chemical toxins?  If you said NO, you most likely suffer from the effects of Chemical Stress.

Mental Stress: These are the stresses we deal with every day in moving through our lives.  The people, places, time and situations of our lives that make us feel tense.  Everyone has these and everyone has a different place they store their Mental Stresses.  Some pick their neck; some pick between their shoulders; some pick their lower backs; some pick their arms, wrists or hands; some pick their hips, knees or feet.  Which area of your body suffers from the greatest amount of Mental Stress?  If you have any of these types of circumstances in your life, chances are you suffer from the effects of Mental Stress.

Emotional Stress:  This differs from Mental Stress in that the things we have a Love/Hate relationship with are the things that create Emotional Stress.  Are all of your relationships flowing smoothly?  Your partner/spouse, your children, your business, your parents, your hobbies or passions?  Are there circumstances around trauma or tragedy that still affect you?  If you have imbalances in any of those relationships, you suffer from the effects of Emotional Stress.

Thermal Stress:  This is the rapid changes in temperature we all face and never give it any thought.  If you live in a climate that has dramatic changes in temperature, whether it be from the weather or from the conveniences man has created with air-conditioning or heating, many times we walk in and out of a building where there is a temperature change of 20 to 60 degrees, depending on the season.  And we never give it a second thought.  Leaving our houses on a cold morning; walking outside an air-conditioned building in the hot afternoon; stepping out of a hot shower or bath into the cold air of the bathroom; all of these are examples of Thermal Stress.  If you've ever experienced this dramatic change in temperature, chances are you suffer from the effects of Thermal Stress.

So How Does A Holistic Chiropractor Address These Effects

Holistic Chiropractors use different techniques to address the different effects of stress on the body.  These Holistic Techniques consist of the following areas being addressed each visit:

  • Structure
  • Nutrition
  • Toxicity
  • Allergy
  • Physiology
  • Emotion
  • Spiritual

There are many different techniques to address these 7 causes of stress, what we call the 7 Pillars of Health.  Among these are Applied Kinesiology (AK), BodyTalk, BioMagnetism, Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET), NeuroEmotional Technique (NET), NeuroModulation Technique (NMT), Nutritional Response Testing (NRT), Total Body Modification (TBM), among others.  When you meet with your Holistic Chiropractor, ask about the different techniques they use in the course of treatment and discuss which techniques are needed to address the unique and specific concerns you have.

By developing a well rounded, multi-faceted treatment plan designed to address both the outwardly expressed signs and symptoms, as well as the underlying cause(s) to those conditions, is the best way to handle all of your health concerns.  Consider this strongly before taking any steps to restore your health.
